Privacy policy
NederlandsLast updated: 12 October 2026
Chrono is an app for sharing photos, videos and short texts with the people you follow, newest first. This policy explains which personal data we process when you use the app and joinchrono.com, why we do that, and what your rights are.
In short: we use your data only to run Chrono. We don't sell it, we show no ads for now, and the app contains no advertising or tracking tools. If we start showing ads, we'll update this policy first, tell you in the app, and ask your permission where the law requires it.
1. Who we are
Chrono is made and run by Simon de Wit in the Netherlands, who is the controller of your personal data under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). For questions about privacy, use the contact form at the bottom of this page. In the app you can also go to Settings › Help › Report a problem ("Instellingen › Help › Een probleem melden").
2. What we process
Your account
Your email address, your password (stored only as a secure hash), your username, name, bio, the link on your profile, your profile photo, whether your account is private, and when you created it.
What you post and how you react
Photos, videos and text posts, captions, the people you tag and where in the photo, whether a post is temporary or archived, your emoji reactions, comments and replies, which comments you like, and how often a post has been shared.
Your connections
Who you follow, who follows you, follow requests, and who you have blocked.
Messages
Your private and group conversations: the text, photos and posts you send, group names and members, and when you last read a conversation (shown to others as "Seen"). That someone is typing is sent live and never stored.
Notifications and settings
Your notifications, your notification settings and, if you allow push notifications, the push token of your device.
Search
Your 20 most recent searches, so you can find them again. You can remove them in the app.
Reports and support
When you report a post, comment, message or profile: the reason, any explanation you add and a copy of what you reported, and we email you our decision. When you report a problem: your description, an optional screenshot, the app version, whether you use iOS or Android, and the version of your operating system. When you use the contact form: your name (optional), email address, topic and message.
The waitlist
When you join the waitlist on joinchrono.com: your email address and the language of your browser, so we can email you once, in your language, when Chrono is available.
Technical data
When your device or browser connects to our servers, our hosting providers record the IP address, the time and the request in server logs. They keep these logs for a short period, for security and to fix problems.
What we don't collect
We don't collect your location or your contacts. The app reads your photo library on your device only to show the photo picker; only the photos and videos you post or send leave your device. The camera and microphone are used only while you take a photo or video in the app. Chrono currently uses no analytics or crash-reporting tools. If we add them, we will update this policy first.
3. Why we process it
- To provide Chrono: your account, showing your posts to the people allowed to see them, delivering messages and notifications. The legal basis is the performance of our agreement with you (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR).
- To keep Chrono safe: handling reports, enforcing our terms, preventing spam and abuse, and limits such as the number of messages per day. The legal bases are our legitimate interest in a safe service (Article 6(1)(f)) and our legal obligations, including those under the EU Digital Services Act (Article 6(1)(c)).
- To help you: answering problem reports and contact messages, based on our agreement with you or our legitimate interest in helping you.
- The waitlist: to send you the one email you asked for, based on your consent (Article 6(1)(a)). You can withdraw it at any time through the contact form.
- Push notifications: only when you allow them on your device. You can turn them off per type in the app or in your device settings.
- To comply with the law, for example when a court orders us to provide data.
Your feed is chronological. We don't use your data for profiling or automated decisions that affect you.
4. Who can see your information
With a public account, other Chrono users can see your posts. With a private account, only the followers you approve can. Your name, username, profile photo, bio and link are always visible to other Chrono users. Temporary posts are only visible to your followers. People you block can't see your profile or posts. Messages are only visible to the people in the conversation. The website never shows posts or profiles.
5. Service providers
We use these companies to run Chrono. They process data only on our instructions, under a data processing agreement.
- Supabase: database, accounts, file storage and real-time updates. Servers in Ireland (EU).
- Mux: processing and streaming videos. United States.
- Resend: sending email, such as login codes, password resets, problem reports, decisions about reports, contact messages and the waitlist email. EU region.
- Expo: delivering push notifications, through Apple Push Notification service and Google Firebase Cloud Messaging. United States.
- Vercel: hosting joinchrono.com. Global network, including the United States.
When data goes to a country outside the European Economic Area, we rely on the EU–US Data Privacy Framework where the provider is certified, and otherwise on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses. Apple and Google distribute the app through their stores under their own privacy policies.
We don't sell your data and don't share it with advertisers. We only disclose data to others when the law requires it, or to protect someone's safety, for example by reporting child sexual abuse material to the authorities.
6. How long we keep it
- Your account and content stay until you delete them. When you delete a post, its photos and videos are deleted too. Archived posts stay in your archive until you delete them. A temporary post moves to your archive after 24 hours, where only you can see it.
- When you delete your account, we immediately delete your profile, posts, photos, videos, comments, reactions, messages, connections, notifications, searches and problem reports. See Delete your account.
- Our database backups are overwritten within 7 days, so deleted data disappears from them within that time.
- Reports you made about others are kept to handle them and as a record of our moderation. After you delete your account, they are no longer linked to you.
- Your email address on the waitlist is deleted once we have sent the email that Chrono is available, or earlier if you ask us to.
- Messages from the contact form are deleted automatically after one year. The copy in our mailbox is deleted once your question has been handled.
7. Security
Data is encrypted in transit and stored encrypted by our providers. Access is limited per user in the database itself, and passwords are stored only as a secure hash. Messages are not end-to-end encrypted. We only look at the content of messages when that is necessary to investigate abuse that has been reported to us, or when the law requires it.
8. Your rights
You have the right to access your data, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to its processing, to receive it in a portable format, and to withdraw consent you gave. You can do a lot of this in the app yourself: edit your profile, delete posts, clear your searches, change notification settings, or delete your account. For anything else, send us a message. We respond within one month. To protect your account, we may ask you to write from the email address of your account.
You can also file a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, or with the authority in your own EU country.
9. Age
Chrono is for people aged 16 and older. If we learn that someone under 16 has an account, we delete it. Parents or guardians who think their child has an account can contact us.
10. The website
joinchrono.com sets no cookies, uses no analytics and loads nothing from other companies, including its fonts. The contact form and the waitlist check that you are a person with a small calculation in your browser, without a third-party captcha.
11. Changes
When we change this policy, we update the date at the top. We announce important changes in the app before they take effect.
